Chapter 582 Giant Gorge City 2
Chapter 582 Giant Gorge City 2
The outside of the door panel had obvious dents and scratches—marks left by battering rams and magical bombardment. Several dents were deep, almost piercing the iron plate, but welded patches covered the cracks.
Eight guards stood at the city gate, fully armed, their armor covered with a thin layer of dust.
Unlike the guards of Starmoon City who looked around, their eyes were fixed on the front—on the direction outside the city. They weren't "standing guard," they were "on alert."
On the other side of the city gate is a wide stone-paved road.
The road was wide enough for four carriages to travel side by side, but there were no carriages on the road, only a few scattered pedestrians.
Most of the pedestrians were dressed in armor or robes, with weapons at their waists, and they walked hurriedly. No one strolled around, no one stopped to admire the scenery; everyone had a clear destination, and every leg was moving in a certain direction.
The buildings on both sides of the street are completely different in style from those in Star and Moon City.
The buildings in Star Moon City are constructed of stone and wood, with carved beams and painted rafters, emphasizing beauty and grandeur.
The buildings in Great Gorge City are all made of gray stone bricks, square and without any superfluous decorations. The windows are small and narrow, like firing ports on fortifications rather than for lighting and ventilation.
There are burn marks on the wall, black and white patches.
Some buildings had their entire walls collapsed, leaving only ruins. Unidentified weeds grew on the ruins, and the weeds were also smoky and turned grayish-black.
An indescribable smell filled the air.
Gunpowder smoke, rust, herbs, sweat, blood, and burnt smells—these odors mixed together to create a unique smell of a war-torn city that instinctively makes people uncomfortable but also forces them to get used to it.
"The City Lord's Mansion is in the East District." Colin led the way. "You need to register first and get an identification badge. Without an identification badge, you can't move an inch in Great Gorge City—you can't enter the barracks, you can't accept missions, and you can't even get supplies."
Lin Tian followed behind him, his pace neither fast nor slow.
Little White peeked out from his shoulder, its dragon eyes darting around as it surveyed the unfamiliar city.
Its scales stood up slightly, an instinctive reaction to sense danger—there were too many unsettling things about the city.
Celia sent out a faint thought from the shadows, so faint that only Lin Tian could sense it.
"The atmosphere here is thick with the scent of death."
Lin Tian did not respond.
After crossing two streets, Colin stopped in front of a gray building.
The building was small, only two stories high, but the walls were about as thick as the city gate. A plaque hung at the entrance, with the words "Giant Gorge City - City Lord's Mansion" engraved on it. The strokes of the characters were very thick, as if they had been directly hammered out with a chisel.
Colin stepped aside, making way for the doorway.
"Go in, the city lord is waiting for you."
Lin Tian glanced at him, then reached out and pushed open the door.
The iron gate was heavy; you could feel the hinges struggling to turn when you pushed it. Behind the gate was a narrow porch, with several magic lamps hanging on the walls on both sides, casting a dim, yellowish light that made the porch look like a tunnel.
Passing through the porch, you enter a square courtyard.
In the center of the courtyard, there was no fountain, only a dead tree. Its branches were bare, the bark had all peeled off, revealing the grayish-white wood beneath, which looked like a standing skeleton in the dim light.
At the end of the courtyard was a wooden door with cracks in the panel, but the cracks were patched up with sheet metal.
Lin Tian walked to the wooden door and pushed it open.
The door wasn't locked.
Behind the door was a small room with a long table in the center and a woman sitting behind it.
She was about forty years old, with short hair and a few strands of gray hair at her temples.
He has a square face, high cheekbones, high brow bones, and deep-set eyes, as if he is always frowning and looking at something, and the frowning has become a fixed expression.
Her skin was the kind of wheat-colored skin that comes from prolonged exposure to the sun; it was rough, dry, and her lips had several chapped cracks.
She wasn't wearing a robe, but rather a set of iron-black armor identical to Colin's. The armor had no decorations, not even a name engraved on it; it was simply a set of purely functional equipment for killing and protecting oneself.
She had a one-handed hammer hanging from her waist. The hammerhead was hexagonal and had some dents on its surface—marks left by countless blows.
Lin Tian could tell her level at a glance.
Level 85.
She raised her head, her gaze falling on Lin Tian. Those eyes didn't resemble those of a city lord; they were more like those of a veteran—sharp, direct, and without a word.
She is the lord of Juxia City.
"Lin Tian?" she asked, her voice even hoarser than Colin's, as if she had a mouthful of sand in it.
"Yes," Lin Tian said.
The city lord picked up an iron badge from the table and threw it over.
Lin Tian raised his hand and caught it.
The badge was small, only about the size of a thumb, with an eagle emblem engraved on the front and the words "Great Canyon City" on the back. The badge was quite heavy, much harder than ordinary iron, and had a faint blue glow on its surface—that was the effect of enchantment.
"Wear it, and you'll be a citizen of Great Gorge City," the city lord said, his tone devoid of any warmth or emotion.
"Your accommodations have been arranged." The city lord lowered his head and continued looking at the documents on the table. "West District, Third Alley, Number Seven. Report to the North Gate Barracks first thing tomorrow morning. Someone will tell you what to do."
She waved her hand, indicating that Lin Tian could leave.
Lin Tian didn't say anything more, turned around and walked out of the room.
The wooden door slammed shut behind me with a dull thud.
The magic lamps in the corridor still shone dimly, and the withered tree in the courtyard still stood there, like a skeleton that would never fall.
Lin Tian walked through the porch and pushed open the door.
The light outside wasn't much stronger than inside, and the hazy sky hung low, like a giant lead plate.
Colin was still outside the door when he saw Lin Tian come out and nodded.
"Is it all done?"
"Um."
"Your place is in the West End, I'll take you there."
Colin led the way, with Lin Tian following behind. Little Whitey perched on his shoulder, while Celia remained silent in his shadow.
They traversed street after street, passing gray buildings after gray buildings. Occasionally, a few pedestrians would pass by, all hurried warriors or mages, each with the same expression on their face—exhaustion, but not collapse.
As you turn into the third alley in the West District, the street narrows further, the buildings on both sides grow closer together, and the sky becomes a thin, long gray line. At the end of the alley is an iron gate with a wooden sign hanging on it that reads "Number Seven".
Colin stopped in front of the iron gate.
"This is it," he said. "Tomorrow at dawn, the North Gate barracks. Don't be late."
Lin Tian pushed open the iron gate.
