Chapter 64 Dinner Party
Chapter 64 Dinner Party
In the heart of Yuehua City, in a tranquil restaurant, four figures sat on either side of an elegant private room at the far end.
Wang Tingshi sat upright, even deliberately slowing her breathing. Theoretically, she shouldn't be here at all, but as the director of the local defense bureau, she still had to act as an accompaniment to her two superiors.
Noah, sitting next to her, appeared quite relaxed. She had changed out of her sailor uniform and was wearing a simple white dress, which made her look much more mature.
Opposite them stood two women with completely different auras.
Yao Guang wore a long purple dress, which made her already gentle temperament even softer. Next to her, Yu Heng had a completely different style—a dark gray casual suit, and his silver-gray short hair added a touch of androgynous chic.
After their daytime conversation, Yao Guang suggested having dinner with Noah. So Wang Tingshi arranged the dinner.
"However, I am still quite surprised. In your perception, I am still someone of unknown origin, so it is quite unexpected that I would be invited to a private banquet by the two of you." Noah spoke first.
That's the truth; the Civil Defense Bureau seems to have placed a bit too much importance on her arrival.
"Miss Noah, there's no need for you to be so formal," Yao Guang said with a smile. "The fact that Lord Kui Biao is willing to meet with you in person is enough to show our sincerity."
"And tonight is just a regular dinner, not a formal meeting. So you can relax."
"Is that so?" Noah gave the two people in front of her a meaningful look. She was clearly skeptical of this statement.
"Of course." Yuheng's voice was cold this time. "We just want to take this opportunity to establish a basic relationship of trust with you. We won't talk about anything work-related tonight."
Noah hummed softly to herself.
That sounds nice. Even with Yao Guang, the lie detector, sitting here, she has to carefully choose her words. Not talking about work? I bet every question tonight is a meticulously designed "work" question.
However, since they've already put it this way, let's just go along with it.
"I see, that puts my mind at ease." Noah nodded. "Will you two stay in Moonblossom City indefinitely?"
"Not entirely. Yaoguang is very busy with official duties and will be returning to headquarters early tomorrow morning. I will be staying in Yuehua City for a while as your liaison between you and the Civil Defense Bureau. If you need any assistance, please feel free to contact any of us."
As the dishes were served, the atmosphere in the private room became much more relaxed.
Yao Guang was indeed a very good conversationalist. She could always find suitable topics, from the local customs and culture of Yuehua City to the latest internet trends. Wang Tingshi was also affected by this atmosphere, and her tense nerves relaxed a little, occasionally managing to say a word or two.
Yuheng, on the other hand, didn't talk much and just ate quietly, as if he really was just there to eat.
However, the initial relaxed conversation was merely a means to lower the other party's guard.
"Speaking of which," Yao Guang asked casually, "Miss Noah, you seem to be quite close to a young man named Shen Zixin in Yuehua City? You even stay at his house?"
coming.
Sure enough, this dinner party was anything but ordinary.
Noah also wore a calm expression. "Yes, he is a very important person to me."
That's the truth. As her "past self," Shen Zixin's importance to her is self-evident.
However, the Civil Defense Bureau's intelligence network is indeed formidable; they've already managed to track her movements. While it's unsettling, it's not so surprising considering it's the Civil Defense Bureau.
"I see." Yao Guang nodded and continued, "Then, how did he get to know you? As a transmigrator, how did you gain his trust in such a short time, even to the point of letting him stay overnight?"
This was arguably the most fatal question. Noah didn't want to reveal that he and Shen Zixin were actually the same person, so she could only try to avoid this kind of questioning—
"Lady Yaoguang," Noah said, her expression displeased, "this is my private matter. If I may, I don't want to answer."
"Ah, then I'll apologize first," Yao Guang said with a hint of apology in her voice. "I was just asking casually, and if it's inconvenient to answer, I won't insist."
It seems that Yao Guang didn't realize this was a fatal problem, allowing Noah to avoid it.
However, Yao Guang continued, "You've returned from the distant future, so you must find everything about this era both familiar and strange. Have you... met 'yourself' from this era?"
This question is closer to the core than the previous one.
The first question could be brushed off with "personal matters" because Shen Zixin is male, and could be implied with a "romantic relationship." But there was nothing to hide about his past.
I have no choice but to "tell the truth".
"I have met him," Noah replied softly. "However, when I first traveled to this era, the 'me' of the past was just an ordinary person."
That's right, when she "just" transmigrated, Shen Zixin was indeed still an "ordinary person." As for how he is "now"... she didn't say anything.
That is the art of language.
"Is that so?" Yao Guang seemed thoughtful and did not pursue the matter further.
It seems that although the questions were purposeful, they were merely "routine inquiries." The other party didn't seem to be "interrogating" them, and apparently didn't realize that those two questions had actually gotten close to the core issue.
The conversation at the dinner table gradually came to an end after several rounds of trivial, everyday topics.
Just when Noah thought the dinner was about to end, Yuheng, who had been silent throughout the meal, suddenly spoke up.
"Miss Noah," her voice was serious, breaking the previously relaxed atmosphere of the dinner, "if I may be so bold, but one last question—was there any concealment of information you brought back from the future out of 'personal motives'?"
If Yao Guang's question was merely a test, then Yu Heng's was an interrogation.
However, Noah responded with a smile instead—
"Of course."
She answered without the slightest hesitation.
This unexpected answer surprised both Yao Guang and Yu Heng.
"I am a man who has crawled back from hell. I completely understand your concerns that I might withhold crucial information or even deliberately mislead you for my own personal gain."
Noah leaned forward slightly, crossed her hands on the table, and looked directly at the two people opposite her.
"Everyone has their own selfish motives, and I'm no exception. But—"
"I can assure you that everything I do is ultimately for the purpose of saving this world from destruction."
After she finished speaking, her gaze fell solely on Yuheng.
"You promised not to talk about work, but you couldn't resist and are giving me your final test, Lord Yuheng?"
A rare flicker of emotion appeared on Yuheng's face. She remained silent for a moment before slowly speaking, "It seems you know very well how to deal with Yaoguang's abilities."
"I'm sorry, Miss Noah," Yao Guang immediately spoke up, her face full of apology, "This is mine..."
"It's none of your business," Yuheng interrupted her. "It was me who insisted on testing it again. It has nothing to do with you."
Noah looked at the two of them, simply smiling, and said nothing more.
She knew the true nature of this so-called dinner party from the very beginning.
However, they seemed to have underestimated the intelligence advantage that a "prophet" returning from the future possessed.
