Chapter 79, Act 1
Chapter 79, Act 1
Gotham Central Bank has welcomed a major client.
Like a Hollywood movie star, the tall, handsome man in sunglasses attracted everyone's attention the moment he stepped through the revolving door with his female companion.
Manager Richard strode briskly toward Qin Wei and extended his hand.
Qin Wei glanced at Richard's slightly yellowed gloves and curled his lips in disgust.
This bastard would never take off his gloves, even when he needs to pee, and he actually wants to use them to shake hands with a client?
Richard, seeing that Qin Wei had no intention of shaking hands, awkwardly rubbed his hands together.
"Mr. Wei, we meet again! But you're a full three hours late for your appointment, and I'm currently..."
Do I have a habit of arriving early?
Qin Wei pulled down his sunglasses and gave Richard a disdainful look—who do you think you are? You dare to criticize me for being late!
"Of course, you're one of Mr. Maroni's favorites, so of course we'll go by your schedule!" Richard waved to his men and whispered to them to quickly kick out the guy who was dragging his feet and refusing to sign the loan agreement.
Richard turned around and put on a smile again.
"Let's talk in my conference room on the second floor."
"Let's stay in the VIP waiting room as usual. I like those soft chairs." Qin Wei certainly wouldn't change the location; the waiting room was the closest place to the vault door.
After setting the meeting place, Qin Wei gave Selena a look.
The group moved to the waiting room.
Around a coffee table, Qin Wei squeezed himself into a rose-red armchair, crossing his legs without a care for appearances; in contrast, Selena appeared dignified and elegant, her beautiful legs pressed tightly together to one side beneath her black pencil skirt. She lifted the black veil of her sun hat and brought the coffee cup to her lips with her little finger.
Richard handed over a thick stack of documents.
"These are investment and financial products that I have specially selected for you."
"Too long, didn't read!"
Qin Wei didn't even glance at the materials handed to him. Having been a grandson for most of his life, he finally got to play the role of a wealthy and powerful lord, and he seemed to be getting too into character. The catwoman beside him appeared to be sitting upright, but in reality, she was pursing her lips and was about to burst into laughter.
"Then I'll read it..."
Richard took out a handkerchief to wipe his sweat. In the past, he would have straightened his back and given Qin Wei a hard time, and at worst, he would not discuss business. However, his house was burgled a few days ago, and his savings of many years disappeared. He urgently needed a group of clients who were foolish and rich.
Qin Wei is precisely the best choice.
He had already investigated and found that the man opposite him was a low-level Roman a few months ago. He took advantage of Maroni's rise to power and made a lot of money. He even sold a manor worth at least 150 million, but only received 70 million.
Richard almost laughed himself to death when he heard the story.
If he were Qin Wei, he would first find a charitable foundation to cooperate with, and then, under the guise of donations, transfer the manor to the family. Afterwards, he would bypass the IRS and hold a charity auction under the pretext of raising funds for impoverished children in the East End.
Of course, in a godforsaken place like Gotham, no one would actually do charity with real money, and the money in the hands of those buyers is certainly not clean either.
Thus, the three parties reached a cooperation agreement. An auction could both avoid taxes and launder money. Even if the proceeds were split 30/70 with the charity foundation, the amount would still be far more than 70 million.
There are many wealthy people in Gotham, but the biggest difference between them and truly successful people is their ability to flexibly exploit legal loopholes and financial rules.
Therefore, the materials Richard had were not "carefully selected" financial advice at all, but rather a trap he set to empty Qin Wei's pockets. He recommended whichever offered the most kickbacks, including loss-making factories, shell companies, and the gray industries of small gangs, without caring about Qin Wei's life or death.
In a sense, these two guys sitting opposite each other were having the same idea.
While Richard was giving a long-winded introduction to "financial management," Qin Wei snapped his fingers at the Irish hacker next to him.
"Mickey?"
"What is it? Boss... no, I mean, the boss!"
"Take a look at the stock I just bought."
Richard felt a chill run down his spine upon hearing this. He had thought that Qin Wei had brought a financial analyst with him, which meant that his fabricated story had been completely exposed.
He turned his gaze to the guy named Mickey beside him. With shifty eyes and a hunched back, his black suit couldn't hide the sleazy aura emanating from him. Could this guy really be a financial analyst?
Mickey's next action further confirmed Richard's suspicions; he patted his pockets up and down and then slapped his thigh.
"Oh no, I forgot my network card!"
Mickey grinned, revealing a row of yellow teeth, and looked at Richard.
"Could I borrow your bank's network port?"
"Please excuse my refusal! The bank has strict regulations that prohibit outsiders from accessing the network."
Amid Richard's righteous and stern refusal, Mickey cast a pleading look at Qin Wei.
Qin Wei stretched and took off his glasses.
"Mr. Richard, please give me an explanation!"
"Explanation? What...explanation?"
"I'm here negotiating a multi-million dollar deal with you, and you're trying to pressure me with your stupid rules!"
"I didn't... I didn't... it's just..." Richard stammered, unable to speak.
"Your words and actions are unreasonable and arrogant. I even have reason to suspect that the investments you recommended to me are highly questionable." Qin Wei casually straightened his coat and stood up. "I think there's no need to continue this cooperation."
No! Dude, I'm being unreasonable and arrogant. Do you want to listen to what you're saying?
Richard really wanted to pick up his coffee and throw it in Qin Wei's face, but he also knew that if he did that, not only would the cooperation be extinguished, but also stacks and stacks of US dollars would be lost.
These bad investments are so bad, you'll miss out on this huge opportunity and there'll be nowhere else to recommend them!
Richard clenched his fists, staring intently at Qin Wei's departing figure.
"Brown! Take this gentleman to the internet cafe!"
After a brief internal struggle, Richard summoned the manager on duty.
Of course, this alone is not enough to warrant Qin Wei returning to the negotiating table. Playing the part completely is his motto, and he has fooled Maroni several times because of his accurate grasp of human nature.
"What's the point of saying all this now? You don't think I'm angry because I can't connect to the internet, do you?"
Qin Wei turned his head, his head held high, a look of disdain on his face.
Even though he was extremely anxious and wished he could just plop back down on the sofa right now.
"Mr. Wei, please don't be angry."
As soon as he saw Qin Wei turn his head, Richard immediately sensed a turning point in the situation. He jogged over and, half-coaxing and half-pleasuring, tricked the old man back to his seat.
Back in his seat wasn't the end of it. Richard spent another ten minutes explaining the helplessness of the bank's regulations in detail, and then another ten minutes dictating a confession, exhausting all his words, before finally managing to make Qin Wei's face turn pale.
"It turns out it was all a misunderstanding. Let's continue with our previous topic, but before that, I need to ask my stock analyst."
Qin Wei raised his head and shouted at Mickey next to the counter:
Has it gone up?
"Boss, prices are soaring!"
"Then let's just throw it away!"
"OK!"
Having received the confirmation code, Mickey quickly entered a string of code into the fake stock trading interface.
When his index finger struck the Enter key, he had completely infiltrated the bank's security system.
